Barbara Norman Hetherington
SAVANNAH – Barbara Norman Hetherington died October 16, 2009 at home after a long illness, under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Born in Millville, New Jersey, in 1939, Barbara moved with her family to Pennsauken, New Jersey, as a teenager. Barbara and Thomas Avery Hetherington were married on June 23, 1962, and lived in Pensacola, Florida, San Diego, California, and Durham, North Carolina, before moving to Savannah, Georgia in 1970.
Barbara was a Registered Nurse, graduating from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She worked as a public health nurse in Philadelphia and a pediatric nurse in Florida and San Diego. After the birth of their first daughter, Barbara chose to be a stay at home mom. She later earned a BA in Political Science and a Masters in Health Science Education at Armstrong Atlantic State University, in Savannah, Georgia, and was the first director of the Skidaway Marine Science Foundation.
An elder and active volunteer at her church, her children's school and in the community, she worked with a number of social service and cultural organizations, serving on boards, in service projects, and in fundraising efforts. Among these are the Auxiliary to the Georgia Medical Society, SAFE Shelter, Hope House, the American Cancer Society, the Savannah Symphony Society, and the Savannah Symphony Women's Guild, where she served as president for one year. Her church, First Presbyterian of Savannah, was especially important to her and her family and she spent many happy times helping in a number of ways over the years. Barbara was an avid reader and a long time member of a local book club. She also enjoyed playing bridge with friends, and doing daily crossword puzzles.
Barbara was preceded in death by her mother, Alberta Mackey, her father, Robert Alfred Norman, her twin sister, Patricia Elizabeth Norman, and her step-mother, June West Norman.
She is survived by her dear husband, Thomas Avery Hetherington, her precious daughters and sons in law, Susan and Badr Ibrahim, Sharon and Bob McAllister, Katherine and Christopher Risdon, and her special joys, her grandchildren, Alex and Joseph Ibrahim and Avery and Olivia McAllister, and her brother, Robert Alvah Norman.
Her family wants to express their thanks and appreciation to the many physicians that cared for her over the years, especially Dr. Anthony Costrini.
Following a private interment, a Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Savannah, 520 Washington Ave., on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at 12:00 Noon. A reception to greet the family will be held in Stewart Hall following the Memorial Service.
In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Savannah, Hospice Savannah, or the American Lung Association.
